Fenwick football opener scrapped due to COVID concern – Wednesday Journal

Fenwick High School’s varsity football game against Nazareth Academy, which was set to take place Friday, March 19 at Triton College in River Grove, has been canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.

Fenwick issued the following statement on its website:

“In observance of the COVID-19 contact tracing guidelines provided by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Village of Oak Park, all members of the Fenwick varsity football team are in quarantine. … The frosh/soph game will be played as scheduled.”

The cancelation means that the debut of new Fenwick head coach Matt Battaglia will be pushed back to at least March 26. The Friars are scheduled to host Joliet Catholic that evening.

Battaglia told Wednesday Journal he was disappointed for the players but understood the decision. He said he hopes the Friars can play next week, but it’s not certain that they will.

Nazareth coach Tim Racki said the Roadrunners are trying to schedule an opponent to play on Friday.

“It’s a huge letdown for all of us,” Racki said in a text message to Wednesday Journal. “I feel awful for these kids.”
