WVU Basketball Eyeing Yet Another Transfer | WVU | West Virginia Mountaineers sports coverage – Blue Gold News

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Mountaineer men’s basketball team apparently has its eyes set on yet another transfer prospect.

West Virginia obtained commitments from a pair of graduate transfers this past week – 6-foot-1 point guard Malik Curry, formerly of Old Dominion, and 6-foot-9 center Dimon Carrigan from Florida International. This weekend, WVU virtually hosted yet another potential transfer, 6-foot-6 forward Melik Martin of Monmouth.

A native of York, Pennsylvania, Martin averaged 4.2 points and 2.6 rebounds per game during his first three years with the Hawks. Then he greatly improved his numbers this past season, averaging 12.5 points and 5.7 rebounds in leading the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference program to a 12-8 record in 2020-21. He was a third-team all-MAAC selection this past year.

Because the NCAA did not count the 2020-21 season against any student-athlete’s eligibility clock, Martin has a fifth season available to him, and he decided to look around to see if he wanted to use that year at another college. He announced on March 23 that he was entering the transfer portal.

“First, I would like to thank Coach King Rice, Dr. Marilyn McNeil, and all of Monmouth University for welcoming me into their community and helping me grow during these past four years,” tweeted Martin. “After much consideration, I have decided to enter the transfer portal as a graduate transfer. Having been blessed with the opportunity to represent Monmouth, I would like to keep open the possibility of returning to Monmouth.”

Martin apparently is open to returning for another year with the Hawks, but since entering the portal, he’s also reportedly gained interest from West Virginia, Pitt, UMass, LaSalle, Rhode Island, North Texas, St. Bonaventure, Charlotte and a number of others.

Described as a bouncy athlete with a high basketball IQ, Martin very well could be the Mountaineers’ next transfer addition.
