BATON ROUGE– The LSU men’s tennis team was defeated by No. 10 Georgia, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at the LSU Tennis Complex.
The Tigers fall to 11-11 on the season and 3-8 in SEC play.
Prior to the match, LSU men’s tennis honored its three seniors: Malik Bhatnagar, Joey Thomas, and Rafael Wagner, and Co-head coach Chris Brandi had nothing but praise for them. “They’re all three great people, great teammates, and great leaders. They are terrific students and represented LSU the right way. Tigers Tennis loves these guys and they’re forever family.”
While the final score was 4-0, the match was closer than advertised. In doubles, each court was knotted up at three at piece. The No. 6 duo in the nation, Trent Bryde and Tyler Zink, showed why they’re a top-10 duo and won three straight games, defeating No. 54 Ronald Hohmann and Rafael Wagner, 6-3. The Bulldogs took the doubles point after Nick Watson and Boris Kozlov were defeated, 6-3.
The fight was there in singles as well, but the Tigers came up short. No. 54 Ronald Hohmann was the first to fall. Hohmann had a chance to push the first set to five-all, but overshot a smash and No. 21 Trent Bryde locked up the first set, as well as the second, winning, 6-4, 6-4. No. 25 Phillip Henning followed up shortly after with a victory over freshman Joao Graca, 6-3, 6-4. Georgia clinched the match on court five after freshman Benjamin Ambrosio fell to UGA’s Billy Rowe, 6-4, 6-2.
The Tigers will play their regular-season finale on Thursday, April 11 against Alabama at the LSU Tennis Complex. This is a make-up game from March 26 after Alabama had to back out due to COVID-19 related issues.
